Stainedleaf nodded as she heard her name called for the Gathering. She wondered how things would play out, with all the Clans being so quiet yet tense. It was like the calm before the storm. Stainedleaf nodded in understanding, sympathy, and encouragement. She understood how hard it must be for Bramblestar to cope with the death of the last Deputy. Suddenly Stainedleaf was stirred with a twinge of unease. Suppose...there was a good reason for Bramblestar not to have named the Deputy yet? Stainedleaf raced after Bramblestar, her worry growing with every step.

Bramblestar, may I speak with you in your Den? Stainedleaf murmured in her Leader's ear, out of range of any other cat. Then, pressing her flank into Bramblestar's comfortingly, she led her on. Whether Bramblestar liked it or not, it was Stainedleaf's duty to care for her Leader.
